Our new Multi-Pilot Aircrew (MPA) Advanced UPRT programme is delivered in a genuine crew environment with the delegate and the Instructor alternating through PF and PM in a variety of scenarios to assist the earliest possible detection of upsets.  This helps develop the mindset of strong CRM skills with clear and open communication, working on ensuring that both crew are operating from the same mental model, communicating effectively during periods of high workload and/or stress and startle, and ensuring that if one pilot has better SA then he or she needs to take control.

The on-aircraft training is integrated with VA Airline Training’s APS MCC, using the same multi-crew techniques, processes and strategies, and ensures that delegates are already familiar with operating as a team during the avoidance, recognition and recovery from Flight Upsets, thereby maximising the value of the on-aircraft training.

The Flight Instructor component of any UPRT programme is absolutely critical - we use highly experienced UPRT Instructors with commercial aircraft and military training to deliver training to delegates. This is carried out on a building block basis, gradually and progressively expanding each individual delegate’s exposure to the flight envelope in a manner that ensures they remain inside their personal comfort zone.  We have substantial experience in tailoring the programme for pilots who are particularly nervous or susceptible to air sickness.  Read more in our testimonials.

Only on a real aeroplane is it possible to expose delegates to the physiological and psychological impacts of Flight Upsets in realistic scenarios.  The importance of doing this for real cannot be overemphasised.  Note that this is NOT an aerobatic instruction programme; whilst light agile aircraft are used, the objective is to expose delegates to all aspects of the flight envelope such that they have a far higher chance of recovering their aircraft should they be unfortunate enough to find themselves in a Flight Upset.

A number of the Flight exercises are flown in a Multi-Pilot environment. Of particular value are the exercises where the student operates as PM with the Instructor as PF. The normal PM process of ‘Prompt – Direct – Intervene’ is utilised which culminates in the PM formally taking control of the aircraft in order to ensure that the aircraft does not enter a Flight Upset.
